When someone sells something on eBay, they need to write a little 'listing' - a title and a few sentences describing the product.
Thing is, there are some fairly bad spellers out there. And that spells PROFITS for you!
If something is spelt incorrectly in a listing, it means that less visitors are attracted to it. That's because people search for what they're looking for by typing in keywords.
I've lost count of the number of times I've come across valuable items with misspellings and found there was no one bidding but me!
Recently I found a listing for postcards by Muscha; elaborate designs, great condition, valuable collectors' items.
There were 5 cards, starting price £49, NO BIDDERS.
Not surprising really as the artist's correct name is MUCHA and his designs regularly fetch £100 plus each!
That's £500 worth of merchandise for £49, just because someone was lazy with the keyboard!
And it happens all the time.
I've found valuable Bonzo dog ornaments worth about £50 each listed as 'Bonso' with me the only bidder. I've bought a pack of valuable postcards listed as 'pstcads', and DOZENS of other things at a pittance of their true market value.

Julie King is from North Tyneside and she operates as killer-heals-com. It's an eBay-based business that sells shoes and boots. Julie expects to earn over £150,000 this year... up from £98,000 last year.
Simon Mohr and his wife Elizabeth used to buy and sell designer clothes for fun a few years ago. So what do you need to get your eBay business up and running today?
The short answer is... not a lot! That's what makes this such an ideal and convenient home business blueprint. You WILL need:
Any old computer - Doesn't matter what make or model, but a computer is a must. Yes, you could go to an internet café to do your selling, but it's not very convenient and in the long run it will cost more.
Internet access - This will be your ONLY running cost. It doesn't really matter how fast your access is... just a dial-up connection will suffice.
A credit card - eBay requires you have one of these to open a seller's account. Don't worry, you don't have to make payments with it.
An eBay account - The great thing about eBay is how user friendly it is. You just go to the website and it takes under 5 minutes to register, choose your eBay ID name and password. Once eBay sends you an acknowledgment email you're ready to start trading!
Something to sell - Remember... you won't BELIEVE what people will pay you great money for right now! As the study earlier revealed, the AVERAGE UK household has at least £3,000 of unwanted items that can be sold on eBay. That means ANYONE can use them however they like.
4 telltale signs that an item
can be marked up by 566%... 810%... even 49,900%Half the thrill of maing money on eBay is watching an item you picked up for practically nothing go for 5, 10, 20 even 1,000 times what you paid for it!
Recently I was at a boot sale where I spied some very old fund-raising postcards for Titanic victims and their dependents. "Why don't you have the whole lot for a fiver?" the man said. Why not indeed! I took up his offer and sold each postcard - which cost me 10p - on eBay for £50! A whopping 49,900% profit on each card!
So how do you spot these hidden treasures? There are many reasons an item that
seems ordinary on the outside may in fact be worth a pretty penny. And not all of them are easy to recognise...1. Does an item have DOUBLE appeal? Sometimes items can attract bids from two or more different eBay categories, thus increasing your chances of getting a great price. An example is a book on a popular theme that's ALSO written by a collectable author - say an early copy of one of Ian Flemming's James Bond novels. A plate I bought recently at the auction of Dame Catherine Cookson's effects had THREE different sales appeals... as a plate in its own right (a very popular collecting arena), a famous owner (a well-known novelist) and area of manufacture (Newcastle-on-Tyne).
2. Is it in good condition? Good condition is relative to the item you're describing. Many collectibles, such as books, postcards, coins and stamps have industry recognised grading standards which can be easily referenced on the web. Make sure you check the condition of your item... even a reasonably common book or stamp could be worth a packet if it's in mint condition.
3. Was the item designed for heavy use? This is an interesting one. A lot of items that fetch great profits on eBay are older ones that were designed for heavy use - pots, pans, coins, banknotes, scissors - and unlikely to survive decades intact. Also, ephemeral items - ones with a limited shelf life like newspapers, calendars and theatre tickets - can be VERY valuable if they've stood the test of time.
4. Does it have a genuinely verifiable date on it? Dated items are like gold to collectors. But do consider, is it an original or a reprint? If unsure, play it safe in your listings by adding: 'all items described to the best of our knowledge and ability.' A satisfaction or money-back guarantee also protects you against feedback problems if you innocently mis-describe goods.
I woke up to the moneymaking potential of the public domain over 30 years ago, when I began collecting vintage postcards from the very late 1890s to early 1920s. When a friend told me that no one held copyright over these wonderful pictures - and I could do with them as I pleased - I started to reprint them and sell them to individuals, collectors, hotels
and restaurants.Today many of these reprints sell like hotcakes on eBay for around £40 each. And I got them all for free!
